We couldnt have timed our vacation to Boston any better. We've been here all week, and its been all Red Sox, all the time. Baseball, beer, and ballyhoo. We went up to Fenway a couple times to witness the mob. And even when we took our trip within our trip and drove through Vermont, we had to make sure we were back to the cabin in time for baseball. Tonight, for the first game of the series, were going out with Eriks sister and her husband to a restaurant in this little postcard-like town where Erik spent many of his formative years. I like it here.

I also like it in Vermont. Its my favorite place Ive been in New England. We were there for three days, driving around in our rented Volvo like a couple of latte-drinking, Volvo-driving, sushi-eating, elitist liberal clichs. Viva! We had the iPod hooked up to the car stereo - the only way to fly. We took a tour of the Ben and Jerrys factory (how could I not?), went to Montpelier (seems much too small to be a capital), amused ourselves by saying Sugarbush and Smugglers Notch, spent a day in Burlington. It was so pastoral and full of autumn splendor. There are just so many trees! And rolling hills, winding roads, clean air, little farm stands at every turn. We bought a bunch of organic produce and made several yummy dishes. Our little condo in the woods was super cozy and had a wood-burning stove. It was dreamy. I felt very Laura Ingalls Wilder, until I accidentally stabbed myself with a knife while chopping an onion. That wasnt pleasant. But at least no one caught Scarlet Fever or went blind.

I really adore Eriks family. Last night we had Lobster Fest 2004 here at his parents place. They really know how to have a good time. Lots of wine and laughing and storytelling. None of the uncomfortable moments that occur at my family's dinners. Eriks two-year-old nephew is obsessed with armadillos, which is an amusing obsession, especially when he does armadillo impressions. The nephew also sings and does a spectacular dance called The Johnny Damon Dance.

Time for more family fun...
